About Maersk Shipping.
The Maersk shipping company is an internation leader in the transportation of a wide variety of goods both domestically and internationally. The Maersk name can be found emblazoned on the sides of trucks, painted on the hulls of ships, or etched into steel storage containers in nearly every major port city in the world. The companies rich history is a particular point of pride, even today, and they make the utmost effort to both respect and celebrate it.
Their Need.
Maersk wanted a shipping facility that would reflect their ongoing maritime heritage. The roots of the company were in the shipments of cargo via their fleet of oceangoing vessels. The company also wanted something that would stand up well to the harsh dockside climate in Baltimore Harbor. The constant buffeting of the winds, turbulent waves and a high concentration of corrosive sea salt called for durable finishes to be applied to the exterior.
Our Solution.
The exterior of the building was designed and constructed to resemble the curved superstructure of an ocean-going vessel. In the late afternoon sun, the Maersk office gleams as the light reflects from the curved aluminum exterior panels. Long lines of windows marching across the front of the building are meant to reference the appearance of a ship's bridge. Whitley Mfg. joined with Williams-Scotsman to construct the project. The accelerated modular system delivered a durable, aesthetically-pleasing, custom building in less than 120 days - and was completed under the quoted budget.
Even after more than 25 years of braving the coastal elements, suffering the wear of human traffic and use and the constant heavy truck traffic that goes with the shipping industry, the building remains a landmark of the Baltimore Harbor.
