About Walla Walla. The county government in the city of Walla Walla administers life in the county of the same name. Walla Walla County is located in the southeastern portion of the State of Washington and the 2000 census reported a population of 55,180. Washington state’s first constitution was ratified in Walla Walla County and was where United States Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas received part of his education. It is the home of significant vineyards and produces many of America’s apples.
Their Need. County government in Walla Walla was running out of room. The sheriff and court offices were cramped. Facilities, built at the turn-of-the 20th century, were more than dated and the prosecutor’s office leased space in a distant building. County government wanted to consolidate and modernize. Additionally, the community, demanded the new building should compliment existing structures in an award winning-downtown.
Our Solution. Construction of the facility began in May of 2003 and was completed that September. The 15,984 square foot building was constructed with maximum security in mind; remote controlled doors, video monitoring and a collection of other modern security features. It also consolidated the offices of county government corrections in one place with room to grow. Finally, the building itself has become a source of pride in Walla Walla. With a gray stucco exterior surrounding large arched windows, an Italianate roofline and architectural touches to make the elevator tower resemble a period feature, the building has satisfied preservationists, as well as county officials. |
